Welcome to HSA Guide: Unlocking the Full Potential of Your HSA

Back in 2017, as I was building momentum in my career as a freelance product manager, my dad gave me a piece of advice that would change my financial trajectory—open a Health Savings Account (HSA). Since I was running my freelance business through an S-Corp and had control over my health insurance choices, I had the flexibility to follow through.

I did what most people do when faced with a new financial concept: I Googled. I quickly found HealthEquity and set up my first HSA. But while the process of opening the account was relatively straightforward, understanding how to actually maximize an HSA was a different story.

The HSA Learning Curve

From the start, I had to figure out:

  • What type of health insurance plan I needed to qualify for an HSA.
  • What "triple tax advantage" really meant (and why it’s such a big deal).
  • How to set up investments within my HSA (and why default options might not be the best choice).

At the time, HealthEquity’s investment options felt pretty limited—mostly conservative mutual funds. I had no idea there were other, more strategic ways to grow an HSA beyond just letting it sit in a basic investment account. Even more confusing? There was almost zero guidance on how to actually spend from an HSA in a way that optimized its long-term value.

Why I Started HSA Guide

Fast-forward eight years, and my perspective on HSAs has completely transformed. With a better understanding of finance and personal wealth-building strategies, I now see just how powerful an HSA can be—not just for covering medical expenses but as a long-term financial asset.

But here’s the thing: Most people still aren’t using HSAs to their full potential.

That’s why I created HSA Guide—to help others navigate the ins and outs of HSAs, from choosing the right investment strategy to leveraging tax advantages and making the most of HSA spending opportunities.

I’m excited to share what I’ve learned and continue learning alongside you. Whether you’re just opening your first HSA or looking to refine your strategy, my goal is to make this resource as practical, strategic, and valuable as possible.

Let’s unlock the full potential of your HSA—together.
